Motivation

It fascinates me to analyze 'what' motivates people. There has to be more to it than just money and power. Both may be 'means to an end', but what is that end? I am convinced it has to be, ultimate, unsuppressible (if there is a world like that) love. Self-Love. A desire to be liked, to be respected, to be recognized and praised and more than anything remembered.

When the 'want' to be remembered becomes a need, the desire to leave a lasting impression for foreseeable future is born. This desire can be satisfied in many ways, creating an art that survives the test of time, creating technology that would redefine the life style, or even find power that will force people to change the way they live. People will have take notice, they will have to know the name of the person who created or changed it.

As a person tastes the power of Power to serve his needs, he then would want to accumulate more of it. It all starts mostly with benign intention of being remembered for positive changes he has brought forth. But eventually, when the same person encounters opposition for the first time, in carrying out his will, the first moral line is crossed, and he eliminates the obstacle.

Once that is breached, it becomes easy to cross the line when ever he wants at will. Gradually he slips into being a dictator who clings to power to do 'good' for his people. Sounds familiar?..in a corporate environment too?

  1. Profound thoughts with a twist on the end...Although I don't have much to comment on dictatorship, I agree there is much power and intrigue in understanding the underlying motivation. Hence many motivational theories abound in Organizational theory books.

And leaving something to remember you by....Procreation - the ultimate underlying motivation for all living organisms?
